The History of Choro in Pará

April 16, 2026 Editorial Staff

The Origins of Choro Paraense

Choro arrived in Pará in the early 20th century, brought by musicians who traveled between Rio de Janeiro and Belém. The city, then in the midst of the rubber boom, was a vibrant cultural hub.

Unlike Rio de Janeiro-style choro, the Pará style incorporated regional elements such as carimbó and Amazonian lunduns, creating a unique sound that continues to enchant listeners to this day.

Great Masters

Names such as Mestre Curica, Waldemar Henrique, and Gentil Puget were instrumental in establishing choro as part of Pará’s musical identity.
